The Artist Speaks
"The Magician" is a color pencil image based on the tarot card which bears the same name. The magician is one who tends his garden while he lives on the earth and offers its produce (in this case, gords) up to God. "Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit (Matthew 12:33)" The six pointed star, which is composed of two intersecting triangles, symbolizes the union of heaven and earth, between God and man. The figure stands in a position known as an orans figure, with arms raised in prayer, which was commonly painted by early Christians on the walls of the catacombs in which they worshiped.
